Wine Country Roots at the East End of the Valley
William Mendenhall platted the Livermore townsite in 1869 and named it after Robert Livermore, who had settled the area decades earlier on the Rancho Las Positas land grant. The city incorporated on April 1, 1876. Robert Livermore planted the valley’s first vines in the 1840s, and commercial winemaking took off in the 1880s when C.H. Wente, James Concannon, and Charles Wetmore founded wineries that are still operating today.
Livermore is also home to the Centennial Light, the world’s longest-burning light bulb, installed in 1901 and still lit at a local fire station, and to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, established in 1952.
