ABOUT SAN LEANDRO
A Flat Bayside City Shaped by Earthquakes and Industry
San Leandro traces back to the Rancho San Leandro land grant of the 1830s and incorporated in 1872. The 1868 Hayward Fault earthquake destroyed the county courthouse and pushed Alameda County’s government seat to Oakland, and for much of the twentieth century the city built its economy on canneries and manufacturing plants, including a Chevrolet assembly plant that ran for decades.
Because the city sits flat and close to the bay, roofs here contend with more humidity and marine moisture than in the hillier communities nearby, which can accelerate wear on older shingle and built-up roofing. We recommend scheduling an inspection before the rainy season starts, especially on any roof older than 15 years, and we handle the City of San Leandro permitting process so it never slows the project down.
