The Hayward Fault runs directly beneath downtown, and it produced a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in 1868 that was the region’s benchmark disaster until the 1906 San Francisco quake took over that title. Hayward grew fast after World War II, and it has kept growing since into a city of more than 160,000 people. The terrain still tells that story: bay flats and former salt ponds along the shoreline give way to rolling hills in the east, with the fault line running roughly along the base of those hills through the middle of the city.
