ABOUT PIEDMONT
A Small Independent City Built by the Early 1900s’ Wealthiest Families
Piedmont incorporated in 1907, largely so residents could avoid annexation by Oakland and keep control of their own schools and services. Wealthy industrialists and business owners built grand estates on its hillside streets in the decades that followed, some designed by architects like Julia Morgan, and much of that housing stock is still standing today.
In 1991, the Oakland Hills firestorm burned right up to Piedmont’s edge but largely spared the city itself, a close call that still shapes how residents think about fire-resistant building materials. We recommend scheduling an inspection before the rainy season starts, especially on any roof older than 15 years, and we handle the City of Piedmont permitting process so it never slows the project down.
